Course Based Civic Engagement (FLC.CBCE) 🗓

We invite Pratt faculty to join the upcoming Faculty Learning Community: Course-Based Civic Engagement (FLC.CBCE) where we will explore the practice and pedagogies associated with civic engagement embedded within courses at Pratt.

Course-Based Civic Engagement at Pratt includes those initiatives that develop empathy for communities, cause-driven organizations, or larger societal issues through direct engagement with a group outside of Pratt’s gates. And that does so within the framework of a studio, lecture or seminar course — fostering professional skills in the process. It is practiced across all of our Schools, and is an integral part of Pratt’s ongoing mission. Yet there is no singular or typical Pratt model; rather there are a variety of factors that shift to address the needs of partners and the strengths of disciplines.

These factors may take form as a single module or an entire course, with students producing a wide range of deliverables for or with our partners. Faculty facilitating such work can utilize the unique opportunities and challenges offered to introduce students to aspects of professional practice, while underscoring definitions of community and sustainability that have far reaching effects in the students’ relationships with the world. But there is no need to reinvent the wheel each time a faculty member explores the possibility of such interactions and initiatives.

This FLC will introduce the small group of faculty participants to existing structures and resources at the Institute and beyond, positioning those interested in this kind of work for developing their own course-based civic engagement, or collaborating with others who are already so engaged. It will also allow for the consideration of new models and connections to build an even more robust network of offerings, as well as internal and external partnerships. Those who may not take on such work will leave with a knowledge base and context for civically engaged work that can be applied to the delivery and positioning of other course content.

All are welcome, but please apply early as spots are limited.
