Faculty Spotlights 🗓

Join us for this online faculty-led series where colleagues highlight a certain classroom practice, use of a technological platform, pedagogical approach, or research on classroom/studio practice they’ve found invaluable and especially relevant for cross-departmental sharing. Each Spotlight takes place virtually and includes about 25-35 minutes of sharing with plenty of time for questions, answers, and conversation in the rest of our hour together.

  • Please join us as we hear from 2026 CTL Faculty Fellow Liz Knauer. For her CTL Fellows’ project, Liz embarked on ethnographic research that sought to provide spaces for faculty to learn from one another about their approaches to liberal arts reading, writing, researching and thinking skills in the context of widespread AI use. Throughout her research this year, Liz pursued questions like, What is the purpose of writing in the liberal arts in a post-AI world? How are Pratt faculty developing approaches to teaching and learning that respond to AI’s presence and uses in the classroom? How does this presence incite opportunities for a remaking of pedagogies and classroom practices that center intellectual flourishing within the context of, and in spite of, AI’s presence and capabilities? Come hear her reflections in this informative session.
  • Friday, November 6 at 12pm RSVP here
  • Please join us as we hear from 2026 CTL Faculty Fellow Sai Shruthi Chivukula. In her Fellows project, Shruthi focused on how a design ethics-focused method called Value Lanes can be adapted as a pedagogical tool in HCI and design classrooms to support learning ethical argumentation skills. By conducting workshops with design students at Pratt to evaluate, iterate, and disseminate Value Lanes. Shruthi will showcase the Value Lanes toolkit and open up its use to the Pratt community, alongside sharing the design process, insights from her research, and some important reflections on her process

  • Please join us as we hear from 2026 CTL Faculty Fellow Yi Xin Tong. Through philosophical, artistic, and pedagogical inquiry, Tong’s project Sustainability Beyond Humanity expands how the Foundation education approaches sustainability. In dialogue with both humanist and posthumanist perspectives, and informed by Taoist cosmology, the project does not deemphasize care for humanity but situates it within broader temporal and ecological frameworks, including deep time and durational thinking. Through sustained observation, material study, and reflective discussion, students are equipped with tools and processes to extend thinking beyond immediacy, cultivating ecological imagination and deepening temporal awareness. Join us for reflections from Tong as his project comes to a close.
  • Monday, November 30 at 5pm RSVP here
  • Please join us as we hear from 2026 CTL Faculty Fellow Esther Beke during her CTL Faculty Fellow Spotlight: BIOCENTRIC DESIGN. Solidifying its foundation. Inspired by a research project on New York City’s native flora – and the revealed richness and complexity of local biodiversity – Biocentric Design considers our precarious relationship with the natural world, as well as the potential for connection and reciprocity through design.

A ground has been laid after three years of teaching the Biocentric Design Studio. The subject represents an approach to design, not just a theme for a class. It was developed with the intention of shifting our paradigm from a human-centric practice to one that designs for all life on Earth.

In-class exercises, discussions, field trips and design projects have produced a wealth of outcomes. Students have demonstrated a diversity of interpretations on the subject matter, aligning with the very idea of biodiversity.

This project is focused on solidifying the foundation to this course and advancing this emerging approach to design practice. Through analysis and organization of outcomes, the development of a deeper contextual understanding, the refinement of frameworks and the expansion of definitions and references, the project seeks to provide greater clarity, stronger structure, new pathways for learning and continued growth of Biocentric Design. Come hear her reflections in this informative session.

  • Wednesday, December 2 at 1 pm RSVP here
  • Please join us as we hear from 2026 CTL Faculty Fellow Julie Pochron. She’ll discuss her collaboration with Foundation and Photography faculty to develop, implement, and refine photography-based color exercises that replace traditional Color Aid paper with photographic methods. Her project will culminate in a Handbook for the Study of Color in Photography and we’ll talk with Julie as she comes to the end of her project.
