Crafting Community / Making Meaning 🗓

Creative practices help us process uncertainty, build community, and find new perspectives on challenges. In this series, we’ll be engaging in various community building activities and creative exercises (e.g., collaging, storytelling, origami, and more)! We’ll meet in person in the East Reading Room (Library, 2nd Floor) on select Thursdays from 12pm to 2pm.

While we hope to build a core community that grows together over the eight sessions, we welcome faculty to join us for any individual session that speaks to their current needs. Each gathering is designed to be meaningful whether you’re attending for the first time or the eighth.

 Session 1: Delving In

  • 08/28 12pm–2pm
  • We begin our journey together by getting to know one another through thoughtful prompts that invite us to share our stories, experiences, and perspectives. This opening session creates the foundation of trust and connection that will sustain our creative community.

Session 2: Cutting and Pasting

  • 09/11 12pm–2pm
  • We turn to the tactile practice of collaging, using images and text to explore our experiences in higher education. Creating together deepens our bonds and opens new pathways for understanding ourselves and our work.

Session 3: Venting

  • 09/25 12pm–2pm
  • In this space we’ve built together, we give voice to our frustrations, challenges, and concerns. Naming what troubles us is the first step toward transformation and collective problem-solving.

Session 4: Storytelling for Dystopian Times

  • 10/16 12pm–2pm
  • We channel our frustrations into creative problem-solving, using storytelling to imagine how we might navigate challenging scenarios and create more humane, learning-centered environments.

Session 5: Making Monsters

  • 10/30 12pm–2pm
  • Through playful creation, we transform our challenges into something tangible we can shape, remake, and ultimately release. Sometimes our monsters become our teachers.

Session 6: Finding Joy

  • 11/06 12pm–2pm
  • We center hope and possibility, sharing what brings us joy in our work and lives. This session reminds us of our deeper purposes and the sources of renewal that sustain us.

Session 7: Storytelling for Better Times

  • 11/20 12pm–2pm
  • We celebrate our resilience and wisdom by sharing stories of transformation, growth, and learning. Our experiences become gifts we offer to our community.

Session 8: Folding with Reflection and Intention

  • 12/04 12pm–2pm
  • In our final gathering, we engage in meditative creation, folding our semester experiences into something beautiful we can mindfully set aside, making space for rest and renewal.
