The New Inclusive Classroom Book Club: Spring 2025 🗓

We invite all Pratt faculty to join our reading discussion group based on the book The New College Classroom by Cathy N. Davidson and Christina Katopodis this semester. The New College Classroom is a guide to college teaching which begins to grapple with the way higher education has changed for the better. It covers new practices that could accompany these changes in order to serve professors and students better. This text includes information about “What the latest science of learning tells us about inspiring, effective, and inclusive teaching at the college level” covering topics such as “Structuring Active Learning,” “Democratic and Antiracist Pedagogy,” “Group Work without the Groans,” and more.

We will be meeting for 3 online sessions, Mondays 3:00–4:00pm (February 3, February 10, February 24). To access the book, you can borrow an ebook from the Pratt Library or pick-up a physical copy of the book from Peg Fox at the Provost’s Office (mfox@pratt.edu

The meetings will be a combination of sharing key highlights from the chapters, posing interesting questions and discussing practices from the book.  Please read as much as you can in preparation for the meeting, and if you are able, come prepared with questions or ideas to discuss. But if you only have time to skim the chapters, we’ll still point out some interesting points so you can follow-up later on.

  • February 3rd, Chapters 1-4: Changing Ourselves; Why Change Now?; Structuring Active Learning; Teaching Is Mentoring
  • February 10th, Chapters 4-7: Changing Our Classrooms; Before the First Class; The First Class; Activities for Any Day of the Term; Democratic and Antiracist Pedagogy
  • February 24th, Chapters 8-12: Group Work without the Groans; Research That Inspires Creativity; Feedback That Really Works; Grades—Ugh!; What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
