New Faculty Orientation

The Center for Teaching and Learning fosters a collaborative faculty community that builds on best pedagogical practices across all disciplines and teaching modalities at Pratt: classroom and studio pedagogy, online and hybrid formats, experiential hands-on learning, and more. The Center aims to create an interdisciplinary, resilient, and reflective learning environment to address the urgency of the ‘now’, ranging from discussing difficult issues in a diverse classroom to larger social and cultural complexities of our times. 

Mission and Community Standards: In order to foster faculty collaborations built on a shared understanding of respect, we have established a set of community standards that we expect all CTL members and participants to follow.

What we offer in all CTL programming are tools and perspectives with which to approach your practice. Contexts, individual and collective, are always to be considered when employing any framework. We hope you’ll take a reflective approach to your teaching, using the resources and practices suggested here when they seem fit.

Week-by-Week Resources 

Weeks 6-10

Approaching Midterm can bring up the concerns of both professors and students. Here are some helpful resources to make the most of this time of self-reflection and assessment, and sail smoothly to the end of the term.

  • As your students reach the halfway point in the semester, it’s a great time to ask for feedback from them on the class. We’ve used this basic Start-Stop-Continue framework since it offers a structure for feedback, with an opportunity to share back with students what you are and aren’t willing to change.
  • Setting the Stage for an Inclusive Classroom recording and resources, and creating an inclusive classroom through low-stakes assignments, the accommodation of varied learning styles, and improvement of the classroom environment
  • Looking to better organize your grades within Canvas? Watch this recording from an old session the CTL ran in Spring 2025. Or look at the “Feedback & Evaluation” section on our Course Design page for more textured information.

Dark Matter U: Justice, Pedagogy, Design Exhibition Visit and Discussion 🗓

Join us for a viewing of the new exhibition at the Center for Architecture, Dark Matter U: Justice, Pedagogy, Design (opens October 1, 2026). After the viewing, we’ll convene at Pratt Manhattan for a conversation about the exhibition. Transportation from the Center for Architecture to Pratt Manhattan takes about 10 minutes by car, 15 minutes by subway/bus, or 20 minutes by walking. Feel free to view the exhibition in advance and just join us for the conversation!

Faculty Spotlights 🗓

Join us for this online faculty-led series where colleagues highlight a certain classroom practice, use of a technological platform, pedagogical approach, or research on classroom/studio practice they’ve found invaluable and especially relevant for cross-departmental sharing. Each Spotlight takes place virtually and includes about 25-35 minutes of sharing with plenty of time for questions, answers, and conversation in the rest of our hour together.

Strategies and Practices for Student Success: Starfish and Beyond 🗓

This workshop will introduce faculty to best practices regarding the Starfish platform, as well as the resources available in the Student Success Center, Undergraduate Advising, and Student Support and Advocacy. In the first half of this workshop, you will learn how to best use Starfish to connect students who may be struggling to the appropriate campus support services and resources to help them succeed in your class. In the second half, we’ll discuss other strategies and practices for student success in relation to communication, difficult conversations, classroom management, and more.

Creative practices help us process uncertainty, build community, and find new perspectives on challenges. In this series, we’ll be engaging in various community building activities and creative exercises (e.g., collaging, origami, and more). We’ll meet in person in the East Reading Room (Library, 2nd Floor) on select Mondays from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.
