Canvas Tips: Group work & collaboration in Canvas

Online collaboration is a critical skill for students today. By leveraging Canvas’s collaboration tools, you can increase student engagement, facilitate deeper learning through peer teaching, prepare students for workplace collaborations, and encourage students to develop project management skills.

The following videos demonstrate how to create student groups in Canvas, how to connect these student groups to collaborative assignments, and how groups appear for students in your course. Group assignments in Canvas can be graded individually for each student, or once for the entire group. Student groups can use discussions which are only accessible to their group members, utilize Collaborations to share and collaborate on documents within the Canvas course, and submit assignments as a whole group.

To learn more about how faculty members at Pratt utilize group work in their courses, consider reading Micki Spiller’s article on Team-Based Learning, Nat Mesnard’s Fall Forum presentation on Collaborative Storytelling, and Christina Katopodis’ Fall Forum presentation on Group Office Hours.
