  • There is shared responsibility between faculty and administration for curriculum and assessment at the Institute.
  • The Office of the Provost maintains a course syllabus template, which outlines sections and language that should be included in all courses, including relevant policies, as well as assessment resources for departments.
  • Accountability and transparency is evident through shared governance at various levels, including the Institute Curriculum Committee, Institute Assessment Committee, and the Academic Affairs Committee of the Pratt Institute Board of Trustees.

  • All curriculum proposals undergo rigorous review at the Departmental, School, and Institute levels to ensure academic quality, integrity, and continuous improvements of the Institute’s educational programs.

The Office of Education Abroad and International Partnerships (OEA) supports faculty in integrating international, credit-bearing experiences into the curriculum and co-curricular offerings. We collaborate closely with academic departments to identify program models that align with pedagogical objectives, disciplinary priorities, and institutional goals for global engagement.

Faculty play a central role in shaping these opportunities, whether through leading programs, advising students, or developing partnerships with institutions abroad. Our global network spans a wide range of institutions and geographic contexts, offering meaningful opportunities to broaden disciplinary perspectives, foster cross-cultural competencies, and strengthen students’ academic and creative development.

We currently offer two primary program models, both of which can be leveraged to enhance academic programming:

  • Global Gateway Programs: Short-term, faculty-led programs offered during the summer and January intersession. These programs are custom-designed and provide an opportunity for faculty to develop intensive, place-based courses that extend learning beyond the campus. They are particularly well-suited for experimental, interdisciplinary, or project-based formats.
  • Exchange Semesters: Semester-long study at one of Pratt’s international partner institutions during the fall or spring term. These exchanges allow students to engage deeply with another academic environment while maintaining progress toward their degree. Faculty may contribute by advising students, coordinating curricula, or helping to expand and evaluate partner relationships.

Support for Faculty:

Our team is here to help you develop your research and deepen your impact. Whether you’re at the early stages of research ideation, committed to a specific funding opportunity, or looking for partnerships to build your capacity and expertise, we have a range of resources available to support your success and growth as a researcher.

Project Development: Our staff is able to provide support for faculty taking an early-stage idea for research through to finding funding, developing a team, partnership agreements, and grant administration.

Human Subjects Research Participation: All projects conducted at Pratt involving human subjects that meet the definition of research must be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). We can provide guidance and approval to ensure quality research involving human subjects is conducted under the auspices of the College.

Award Management: Once you have been successfully granted an award, there are a number of responsibilities and procedures that Principal Investigators (PI) must follow to ensure compliance with Pratt internal guidelines, the guidelines of the funding organization, as well as local, state, and federal law.

Policies: Oversight of grant awards is maintained through a partnership between the Principal Investigator, their academic department, Finance and Administration, and Research and Strategic Partnerships in the Office of the Provost. The policies governing research funding are designed to protect the integrity of the research, ensure responsible stewardship of public funds, and maintain the Institute’s reputation as a reliable and ethical research institution.

Support for Students:

  • The funding that is developed for research can be used to support student internships, graduate assistantships, or part-time staff positions.
  • When students get involved in research projects, they get real world experience in exploring new ideas.
  • Many of our research experiences support partnerships with industry which enable students to meet, network with, or even work with possible employers.

The Libraries offer a variety of services and collections that support the Institute’s curriculum and faculty and student research. Students and faculty can access materials on-site or online, borrow hard-to-find resources from other libraries nationwide, and directly contribute to Libraries’ collections by recommending purchases.

The Office of the Registrar provides the following:

  • Schedule all classes for registration and assign them to classrooms.
  • Attend to all reported Retention Alerts.
  • Instructions and support relating to online grading to Faculty.
  • Instructions and support relating to online class roster. We work with Faculty to identify and drop students that are on the class roster that have not shown up to class. Provision of data to academic and administrative departments and federal and state compliance report.

Benefit to Students

The Office of the Registrar provides the following:

  • Assist students with registration, viewing of grades, and maintenance of their academic record.
  • Enrollment and graduation verifications.
  • Oversee the completion of degree requirements.
  • Certify degree requirements for all students and issue diplomas.

We are a staff of 13 professional advisors. Each undergraduate student is assigned an advisor based on their major.

What we do:

  • Meet with students at least twice a year, holistically supporting them in forming and achieving educational goals within Pratt’s curricula.
  • Help students understand and navigate academic policies and procedures.
  • Track students’ academic progress and guide them toward timely graduation.
  • Administer academic warning, probation, and dismissal actions after the fall and spring semesters.
  • Help students to maintain or regain good academic standing.
  • Use the Starfish system to keep records of advising meetings, track academic flags, communicate with students, refer students to campus resources, and update concerned faculty.
  • Act as liaisons, when necessary, between students and campus resources such as the Office of the Registrar, Student Success, Learning Access Center, Office of International Affairs, Center for Educational Opportunity, Counseling Center, etc.
  • Partner with the Office of the Registrar and academic programs to ensure accuracy of student degree audits.
  • Keep abreast of curricular changes and assist in disseminating this information to students. Advisors meet with the chairs of the department(s) they advise at least twice a year.
  • Participate in department-sponsored student events.

What we do not do:

  • Career advising – we encourage students to reach out to chairs, faculty, and the Center for Career Professional Development.
  • Mental health counseling – we refer students with emotional or mental concerns to the Counseling, Health, student advocacy, and/or Learning Access Centers.
  • Tutoring – we refer students to resources such as Student Success and the Writing Center.

The Learning/Access Center (L/AC) facilitates full access for Pratt students with disabilities so they can freely and actively participate in all facets of Pratt life. The L/AC collaborates to provide Institute-wide advisement and consultation on disability-related matters (including legal compliance and universal design) and provides individual services and tools to facilitate diverse learning styles and accommodations in a sustainable, inclusive manner. Current and prospective Pratt students who identify as having disabilities, including learning disorders, ADHD, psychological/psychiatric conditions, chronic illnesses, physical/mobility conditions, blindness, low vision and hearing loss, as well as temporary disabilities can register with the L/AC to determine and receive reasonable accommodations for the classroom, housing, and other campus settings. The L/AC also arranges elevator access, assistive technology, software, and materials in alternative formats. L/AC staff assist students in connecting with helpful Institute resources, advocate for students in implementing accommodations, and collaborate with campus department administrators regarding specific student needs. The L/AC also houses the Veteran Resource Center which works with veterans and military-affiliated students.

Benefit to Faculty

  • If a student experiences an injury that affects mobility, the L/AC will work with the registrar for classroom relocation to an accessible space.
  • The L/AC notifies faculty about students with disabilities who receive classroom accommodations via an email notification. Receipt of the email is considered the legal notification to provide accommodations, and indicates that the student has provided permission for the professor and L/AC to speak. The L/AC works with students and faculty as needed to implement the approved accommodations.
  • Faculty can refer students who have disclosed disabilities (including mental health conditions) via Starfish or by connecting them with L/AC staff. Faculty can confer with L/AC staff about student concerns and discuss strategies for accommodation implementation.
  • Staff are available to give presentations on a wide range of topics related to the accommodation of students at Pratt.
  • Faculty can view the students with accommodations in their classes through the L/AC Faculty Portal.

Benefit to Students

  • Students with disabilities can register with L/AC to determine and receive reasonable accommodations for classroom, housing, and other campus settings.
    • Students who register with the L/AC do not need to provide documentation and explanations to professors each time they need an accommodation; students can select professor notification to protect their privacy and simplify accommodation implementation.
    • If appropriate, the L/AC can arrange for non-classroom accommodations such as priority registration or reduced course load.

Health Services is the medical support resource on campus, providing in-person and telehealth appointments for all eligible students. We provide basic healthcare services, gynecologic care, LGBTQ+-specific concerns, Wellness and well-being services, and STI testing and treatment.

The Counseling Center provides enrolled Pratt students with confidential, short-term individual and group psychotherapy, and referrals to outside providers. We are staffed by licensed psychologists and clinical social workers, who specialize in working with young adults. In addition, a consulting psychiatrist is available for psychotropic medication evaluation. We offer daily appointments (Monday through Friday) for both in-person and virtual/remote sessions. Additionally, we are available 24/7 by phone to address urgent concerns and speak with someone. The mission of the Student Success Center is to cultivate a campus culture that builds academic excellence for students who are thriving and flourishing, with a focus on retention, persistence, and graduation. Our comprehensive academic support services and student success programming empower students to reach their personal and educational goals. The Student Success Center provides academic coaching and tutoring for all Pratt students. Our programming includes student success workshops for first year students, thesis workshops for graduate students, Zoom study rooms and more. The Student Success Center also supports and celebrates first generation college students. Pratt defines first generation students as a student who does not have a parent/guardian with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Faculty can refer students to the Student Success Center for academic support, including time management and tutoring. To refer students for academic support, faculty can raise an Academic Support Referral for students in Starfish. Faculty can also use Starfish to make referrals to other offices on campus, raise Kudos to acknowledge students who are doing well, and raise flags for students when there is a concern. Additionally, faculty can use Starfish office hours to schedule appointments with students, track student attendance and more. Benefit to Students

The Student Success Center has academic coaching and tutoring services available to all Pratt students. Academic coaching includes general study strategies, such as time management help. Tutoring support includes studio, software and subject tutoring. Students can choose from in-person or virtual appointments. In addition to in-person and virtual appointments during regular hours, we often can provide virtual tutoring sessions in the evenings and on weekends. Students can also use Starfish to schedule appointments with academic advisors, find contact information for individuals in their success network (including instructors), raise their hand to get help and more.

The Academic Senate is a shared governance body representing faculty, chairs, and teaching staff at Pratt Institute. The Senate advises the Board of Trustees and administration, and its main responsibilities include academic policy review, curriculum review, funding opportunities, and nominations and elections for various positions, including nominating Pratt’s annual Distinguished Teacher, Research Recognition, and Academic Service Awards. The Senate meets monthly during the fall and spring semesters to hear reports, vote on actions, and hold elections for open positions.

The mission of the Pratt Institute Department of Campus Safety is to ensure a safe and secure campus that is welcoming and inclusive. The Department assists the Institute in maintaining and fostering a student centered, learning-focused, and diverse campus where community members and visitors can feel safe. The Department of Campus Safety provides 24-hour protection of the campus and maintains contact with the local police department (88th Precinct Brooklyn and 6th Precinct Manhattan). Police visit the campus at the request of the Department of Campus Public Safety for the purposes of investigating crimes.
